Ice Dams in the Red River Valley: What Gutters Can and Cannot Fix

7 min readPublished August 23, 20263 cited sources

Gutters do not cause ice dams and new gutters will not stop them. Attic insulation and ventilation do. What a contractor should tell you before selling heat cable.

What an ice dam is

Heat escaping the living space warms the roof deck. Snow melts, runs down to the cold overhang, and refreezes. The ridge of ice that forms backs meltwater up under the shingles.

What that means for gutters

The gutter is where you see the problem, not where it starts. A full gutter of ice is a symptom of heat loss through the ceiling plane.

What genuinely helps

  • Air sealing the attic floor is the highest-value fix in almost every case.
  • Insulation to R-49 or better for this climate zone.
  • Balanced soffit-to-ridge ventilation so the roof deck stays near outdoor temperature.
  • Ice and water shield at the eaves, installed the next time the roof is replaced.

What is oversold

Heat cable manages a symptom, runs up an electric bill every winter, and shortens shingle life at the eave. It is a reasonable stopgap on a problem valley or over a doorway. It is not a solution for a whole house.

Questions to ask any contractor selling you a fix

Ask what they measured. If nobody has been in your attic with a temperature reading or an infrared camera, they are guessing.
