How to Read a Gutter Bid Line by Line

6 min readPublished August 23, 20263 cited sources

A comparable bid names material gauge, hanger type and spacing, outlet size, and disposal. Anything less is a number, not a scope.

The nine lines that must be there

  • Linear feet of gutter, broken out by elevation
  • Profile and size, K-style or half-round, 5-inch or 6-inch
  • Metal thickness, since .027 vs .032 aluminum is a real durability difference
  • Hanger type and spacing, hidden hangers with screws, at 24 inches or tighter
  • Downspout count and size, and where each one discharges
  • Outlet and miter fabrication, box miters vs strip miters
  • Removal and disposal of the existing system
  • Fascia repair allowance, or an explicit statement that none is included
  • Warranty split into material warranty and workmanship warranty, with years for each

Payment terms that should make you pause

More than a third down before material is on site. Cash-only pricing. A deposit taken at the door on the first visit.

Paperwork to require

License number, proof of general liability, and proof of workers compensation. A lien waiver at final payment.

What "lifetime" means

Almost always the lifetime of the original owner occupancy, prorated, and void if anybody else touches the system. Read the transfer clause before it changes your decision.
